Painting is key to our understanding of life on earth.
It gives form to the never ending story of the order of things.
That may sound simple, but for me it's fundamental.
Where would we end up if we don't know where we are?
Content in this sense is personal experiences reflecting in the work of art. Limitation is the golden rule. Everything else is fiction.
The clarity of the story depicted and its expression in simplicity is the goal. On the way there, everything comes together to the appearance of figures or their dissolution.

One hundred years after the formal ”inventions” of the avantgardes in art, and in the consciousness of what has happened in the meantime, Ulrich Wulff fuses painting-immanent aspects as well as concrete levels of meaning from the past and present.
Both dimensions – that can be cut down to be labelled as art and reality – are approached to each other and brought to cover,
as well as outplayed. This pendulum-like movement, a tension
between immanence and contextuality that never comes to rest,
is an important factor to be comprehended by the viewer, if he or she wants to approach the vitality that is inherent in Wulff´s art.

The surface is the defining stylistic device of the painter Ulrich Wulff. It is the starting point of all his works.
Sometimes monochrome and finely painted, sometimes blotchy and oscillating between figurative pictorial elements and geometric abstraction, he creates scenes that reflect the artist’s humorous self-image.

Ulrich Wulff, well-versed in the highs and lows of the diverse Modernist strategies of artistic self-presentation, is a painter of mischievous austerity.
For example, by countering impersonal geometric abstractions with his own signature. In this regard, his paintings have a certain theatrical quality, as you can never be sure, if they are »seriously performing« or »performing seriousness.« Be they now untitled, unbound or even unleaded.
